What our customers are saying
- We visited on a Tuesday lunch time and were able to choose anything off the menu even though it was a quiet time. The staff were very friendly and obliging. We all chose a different selection and the food was delicious and plentiful. There is a good selection of beer and wines. The pub itself is a beautiful old coaching house type of place with bags of room and spotlessly clean. It is also dog friendly. We will definitely be revisiting.Tom Armstrong10/20/2023
Amazing gluten free vegan food, really dog friendly, loved our stay! My dog Bodhi and I stayed here at the end of this stage of The Two Moors Way walk. Barbara was incredible with sorting out gluten free and vegan food options for me, and the food was some of the best gluten free vegan food I’ve ever had. Andy was great fun to chat to in the bar and made me feel very welcome. The room was good with great black out curtains for a good nights sleep, They provided blankets and a treat for Bodhi and really looked after us. A great stay!
Alison10/10/2023 - My sister and I met up here today for lunch. Was greeted warmly and we sat outside in the sun. Lunch was delicious with lots of choice and a really good price point and a decent serving. Even the side salad was super tasty. Will defo be back. Thank you and sorry we hogged the table for so long from all our chatting! XBeth Jackson9/22/2023

Fantastic Village Pub We (family of 4) had our 2 week summer holiday in Devon staying close by to Witheridge. The hospitality of the landlord, Andy and the staff were all so welcoming and the quality of the food excellent. So good in fact we ate at The Mitre four times during our stay including an excellent Sunday lunch. Great range of ales, lagers, wines and cocktails too. Great to sit outside the pub on a summers evening.
Chris8/22/2023Dog friendly pub with nice beers & a friendly welcome We were staying in Witheridge and ventured into the Mitre Inn on a couple of nights with the dog. The welcome was very friendly and our Cockapoo was spoilt with attention and treats. The ale selection was good – served in traditional glasses with a handle – and it had a lovely friendly atmosphere. We read in our hosts Guest book that many guests have raved about their Sunday lunches but sadly we read this later in the week! The food certainly looked good. All in all great country local, and I said to my wife it’s a shame we don’t live here! Thumbs up from Bella 🐶 and us 👍
Rich D8/03/2023Give it a go! A group of ten visited The Mitre last night for our monthly get-together. We were impressed by the staff, the food and the ambience. The beer was good and the well priced wines were seemingly sourced from a justifiably respected local wine-merchant. Four star rating is perhaps a tad generous, but certainly a long way ahead of average, so 3 stars would have been unreasonably ungenerous.

Traditional pub This is the only pub in the village, and it is a traditional pub, with all of the touches such as dogs chilling on the sofas, open fireplace, dated carpets and old school bar and seating. The barman was friendly and helpful, and there were a good selection of ales, spirits and snacks. We had some lunch and it is pub grub through and through, nothing fancy and it did the job.

Lisa T6/10/2023A much needed break from bike-packing Heaven for weary bike-packers.Doing the Coast to Coast/2 Moors way from Plymouth to Watchet, it had been a looooong day in the saddle and we were just getting a little tired and emotional when we arrived at Witheridge.“We’ll stop for a pint and if there is any food, a light bite, before carrying on and finding somewhere to bed down for the night” was the gist of our plan. The Mitre Inn came up trumps in all sorts of ways.Good beer and cider (non-negotiable for us!), very friendly and helpful staff.Yes. We are still doing food.Yes. We have rooms.Yes. The family room is available andYes. Breakfast is included.Oh and Yes. We have a secure lock-up for your bikes.Much joy on eating the very rare roast beef sandwich (look at the picture!).Even more joy discovering our wellAppointed en suite room, hot showers, the quiet lounge for relaxing over a nice red later on. The peace and quiet! The excellent breakfast

- Two night stay – we made the right choice ! The Mitre Inn came to our rescue when my wife and I discovered that our booked holiday cottage was unavailable on arrival. We were tired, stressed, 300 miles from home, our holiday plans in ruins, and it was Easter weekend. We needed to find dog-friendly accommodation urgently.
Fortunately the Mitre Inn had a room available at very short notice. We were greeted on arrival by the owner, made to feel genuinely welcome, and shown to a clean, comfortable dog-friendly bedroom with private bathroom. We sat in the cosy bar, in front of an open fire, dined on food and drink of superb home-cooked quality, and were able to relax, unwind and feel completely ‘ at home ‘. Our Golden Retriever joined forces with the two resident pub Retrievers, and the friendly staff, locals and dogs all ensured we had a memorable evening. The Mitre Inn and its staff had looked after two ( three ) weary travellers so well, we decided to stay a second night ! After another good sleep in our comfy room, a delicious breakfast set us up for the long drive home. Many thanks to Barbara, Andy and their polite and friendly staff. We would happily return, and hope to do so. Highly recommended.Richard F4/19/2023Two night stay – we made the right choice ! Richard F4/13/2023Ideal Stay in a Quiet Village Pub My friend and I stayed here as we trekked the Two Moors Way, booked through Contours Walking Holidays. This was a one night stay in the middle of a wet week when we arrived tired, extremely wet and muddy. We were expecting a Twin Room. What we actually got was more akin to a lovely small apartment with loads of space and everything we could have possibly wanted. The pub is quiet and friendly in a small village. We were transferred here from Orchard Bishop with a return taxi transfer which also worked very well for our trek.
Our hosts were friendly and helpful and we had a very good evening meal and breakfast which set us up a treat for the next stage of our trek.Bob E4/01/2023 -

Breakfast What can I say. We are so lucky to have this friendly pub in our village. We always visit here for evening meals but they have recently started breakfasts. What a treat for us on the weekend. No cooking or washing up. The service is always friendly. Food always good and our little Loki 🐾 is always so well looked after even having his very own cooked sausage. Thank you so much guys. We wouldn’t be without you all 🥰 xxPS – the clean plate says it all!!
Laura3/04/2023I like sausages After a lazy morning, I was taken on a brisk walk down to the Mitre. I saw the Barman with the beard, he always makes a fuss of me. I like him. After lots of attention from all the friendly peoples there I got a sausage! It was hot so I was made to wait for it. But it smelt amazing. It was perfectly cooked and a great treat for me and everyone said I was a good boy.I like the Mitre, I hope I can come back soon.Loki, Border TerrierAged 2.

Raymond H2/27/2023Beat Sunday lunch ever We were staying nearby and had a takeaway meal on the Saturday and booked for 6 for Sunday lunch. The food was delicious and there was loads of vegetables. We all came away saying it was the best Sunday lunch we had ever had. The landlord was friendly and welcoming and if we are in the area we would definitely go back

Outstanding establishment We had our reservations for another inn canceled at last minute due to heavy snow. We wanted to find a place close to where we were going. Thankfully we found The Mitre Inn. The accommodations are lovely, but the true star is the amazing food. We had stayed at a posh spa for two days and the food here at the Mitre Inn blew the competition away. The Christmas menu is really outstanding and it was hard to pick one thing instead of ordering everything. Breakfast the next morning was also quite impressive. I had scrambled eggs and let me tell you that it is hard to find a place that makes them perfectly, but here they do it. Just the right level of creamy texture. The house made jams are also fantastic.
Abraham G12/11/2022December Visit Thought we’d give it a try as seen it’s Christmas menu on Facebook. We had Sunday lunch which was beautiful. Beef, Yorkshire pudding, potatoes and 5 different veg. Got so much food for the price. Lovely setting, the bar very quaint and all done up with xmas decorations. Staff were very friendly and relaxed. Will definitely return and recommend to our campers
Kelly D12/04/2022 - Couldn’t have wished for a better venue to celebrate my other half’s 40th Birthday. The staff were very accommodating, helpful and friendly. We had a table of 15 and the table service was top class. The food was amazing and we all had a very enjoyable night. Family friendly pub and would highly recommend a visit.11/12/2022This is a village pub/Inn that is easy to find and is well worth a visit, but do check if they are open as the opening hours are different to a town pub, so check their website . If you are having food I highly recommend that you book a table as its a popular place. I can’t comment on the food as we only had drinks and popped in on the off chance that we could get something to drink as we had been walkpart of the Two Moors Way. The real ale that I had was very nice The barman was great and very friendly and funny. The bar is small but is great. Well worth a look if in the area or you want to see what a small village pub looks like.11/12/2022
Fantastic roast with a warm and friendly atmosphere. Just popped in for a lunchtime drink. We were impressed with the lovely friendly atmosphere and staff. The table nearby were gaving roast dinners, it looked really nice so we decided to have dinner ourselves. It was really lovely, lots of fresh vegetables. We will definately be back. Thank you.
Valerie H11/09/2022 - Lovely overnight stay in beautiful location I stayed here a few weeks ago last minute and I had the best nights sleep I’ve had in a long time. The bedroom was beautiful with lovely decor and the bed was extremely comfortable.
The staff were very professional and friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
I would highly recommend.Lisa Faye10/30/2022 -
Amazing home made food This is a lovely quaint and romantic pub, which also has rooms to stay. We had a lovely meal, which we came to twice whilst on our holiday stay in Devon. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The food was home made and very tasty. Would highly recommend the meatballs, venison sausage with mash, homemade steak pie with chips and peas. Wish the pub was closer to home otherwise would come here regular, however if I am in Devon again we would definately visit here. Well done to the chef/s

Great surprise We were on a long distance drive and just happened to stop outside this pub to check the map. It was lunchtime and we looked up to see this enticing place right beside us with two friendly dogs eyeing us from within. The historic interior is full of character with three bars/dining rooms each with a different atmosphere – there seemed to be a nice garden out the back though we didn’t investigate that. The beer was well kept and the two lunches we had were a very pleasant surprise – all helped by remarkably friendly service. What a lucky chance that we stopped here.
